The public health danger of fluoridated water is astronomical, and it will only get worse as it builds up in our environment. Americans should consider following the lead of most European countries when it comes to water fluoridation. Here is what some countries in Europe have already done:4

| With more and more industries developing that produced toxic fluoride waste, a big public campaign touting the benefits of fluoridated water was widely supported by big money interests, and scientific researchers soon found that it was career suicide to oppose water fluoridation. Soon, countless toothpaste companies jumped onto the bandwagon and became new markets to which industries could sell their toxic fluoride waste.
But there was a deadly bait and switch involving the type of fluoride studied for dental health versus the type of fluoride put into our water and toothpaste! |

10. Avoid electromagnetic fields (EMUs), especially with children. EMUs have been linked to childhood leukemia and brain cancers. Use appropriate protection on your computer screen, avoid using a microwave oven, avoid living near hydro towers.
11. Do not use hormone disrupting or mimicking substances such as chemical pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, fungicides, and bug killers.
12. Do not use cleaning, polishing, renovation materials in your home that list unspecified "inert ingredients. |

Currently, less than 2 percent of the people in Europe drink fluoridated water, and studies have shown that people with the best teeth in Europe are from those countries that do not fluoridate their water.5 Getting toxic fluoride out of our water, common foods and beverages, and daily toothpastes is one of the best things we can do for ourselves and our environment.
Asbestos
Another highly carcinogenic substance in our environment, that the average person has very little control over, is asbestos. Asbestos is a curious substance. |
| Unfortunately, even if you don't drink fluoridated water or use fluoridated toothpaste, that does not mean you are not being exposed to toxic fluoride. Through water sources, it has now contaminated many of our foods and numerous commercial beverages such as sodas, juices, teas, beer, and wine. Exposure to fluoride contamination in modern countries is just about inescapable. (See the Appendix for more information on the history of fluoridation and studies that link it to cancer.)
Another environmental cancer-triggering substance most people rarely think about is asbestos. |

When Sam, 23, first came to see me, he was so lethargic that he fell asleep on the examining table. The severe seizures from which he suffered required him to take several antiepileptic drugs to keep them in check. However, the drugs were so strong that Sam was in a con-standy drowsy state. Understandably, he wanted to get off the drugs, but avoid having more seizures. |

There is no question that disruption of collagen, while not always visible, occurs in the teeth of all children drinking fluoridated water or taking fluoride supplements. Furthermore, many soft tissue cells do not produce collagen. Therefore the damage done to these cells will not be reflected in visibly detectable deformities but rather in more insidious biochemical disturbances which will be discussed later. In the next two chapters the symptoms as well as the expected symptoms that result from fluoride poisoning of other collagen-producing cells will be presented. |

Fluoride supplements are available only with a doctor's prescription. If you want to try fluoride, you'll have to discuss these supplements with your doctor. If your water isn't fluoridated, good food sources of fluoride include tea, mackerel and canned salmon with bones. Daily intake of up to ten milligrams of fluoride from foods and water is considered safe for adults. |

58. Iodine (Iodide)
Facts:
Two-thirds of the body's iodine is in the thyroid gland.
Since the thyroid gland controls metabolism, and iodine influences the thyroid, an undersupply of this mineral can result in slow mental reaction, weight gain, and lack of energy.

SOURCES OF WATER FOR HUMAN USE
Common fresh water can be divided according to its source. We are aware of rain, snow, spring, river, well, lake, and marsh water. These divisions are not so useful, however, as the source of water is not always indicative of its quality. From water's extensive solvent powers, it is obvious that in its natural state it must be more or less contaminated with foreign matter. |

You might think that because fluoride is added to water and toothpaste, it's one of those nutrients that you just can't live without. That's not the case, although its potential for making visits to the dentist more pleasant is undisputed.
Both oral and topically applied fluoride are incorporated into tooth enamel. Fluoride protects the enamel, so it is less likely to dissolve under assault from the acid-producing bacteria that thrive in your mouth. |
| People who don't drink fluoridated water may get very little fluoride in their diets, unless they're big tea drinkers. One cup of tea offers one to three milligrams of fluoride.
Up to ten milligrams of fluoride a day from foods and water is considered safe for adults. In rare cases, immediate death from fluoride occurs as a result of cardiac arrest, possibly brought on in some cases by an anaphylactic (or anaphylactoid) shock. More often, fluoride-induced acceleration of the aging process leads to a disease so persistently severe that death is an eventual, though not immediate, result.
WARNING: Everyone being exposed to the levels of fluoride found in the drinking water is being chronically poisoned. |

Symptoms of Fluoride Poisoning in the Western World
To begin to answer, let's refer to the United States Pharmacopeia, a guide to drug information, which lists some of the side-effects that can result from the daily ingestion of the amount of fluoride found in 1 to 2 pints of artificially fluoridated water. The list includes some of the same symptoms as those mentioned in Chapter 1, as well as allergic-type reactions. (The relationship of these allergic-type reactions to aging will be discussed in Chapter 3). |
| Normal Protein Distorted Protein
Allergic or allergic-type responses to fluoride at levels comparable to those found in one to two pints of fluoridated water have been reported in the literature and are listed in the Physician's Desk Reference as well as the United States Pharmacopeia.

I also told her to eliminate: all thyroid-inhibiting food such as raw cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts) which should only be eaten steamed (cooking kills the thyroid-inhibiting substances); all unsaturated oils (canola, safflower, soybean, flax); fluoridated water and toothpaste; and foods with pesticide residues (which are estrogenic and therefore suppress thyroid secretion).102 I advised her to eliminate soy products as well because there is some evidence that soy also may affect thyroid function. |

Sodium fluoridated water, in contrast, loses no fluoride with heat.) One of the most concentrated sources of fluorine is goat's milk. Other sources are seaweed, rice, rye, parsley, avocados, cabbage, and black-eyed peas; herbs high in fluorine include juniper berries, licorice, lemon grass, bancha tea twigs, and other tea plants.

A number of other chemicals are intentionally added by some city water departments to stabilize the action of water and keep pipes from rusting. |
| Fluoridated water suppresses thyroid activity, which upsets the hormonal system in general; chlorinated water destroys vitamin E, an essential nutrient for menstrual ease. Commercial red meats and poultry have residues of steroids composed of female animal sex hormones, which interfere with human menstruation. In my opinion, fluoridated water is another example of technology's treating the effect instead of correcting the cause, which is primarily poor diet.
Fluoride is probably not essential to humans, though it is helpful in strengthening the bones and teeth. It is found only in trace amounts, about 2-3 grams, in the body, and most of that is in bones and teeth. The blood level of fluoride is about 0.3 mg. per 100 ml. Fluoride has no known function other than strengthening teeth and bones.
Intestinal absorption of fluoride, especially the more soluble sodium fluoride, is fairly good. |

Another option for removing sodium fluoride is to stir briskly one teaspoon calcium powder per gallon into charcoal-filtered fluoridated water. The fluoride will combine with the calcium to form calcium fluoride. This may not be harmful in small doses, but if it is not wanted, let it settle to the bottom of the container and use the water off the top. (Dr. Bronner's Calcium-Magnesium Powder is commonly used for this purpose.)
