Prescription Alternatives, Third Edition: Hundreds of Safe, Natural Prescription-Free Remedies to Restore and Maintain Your Health

This even holds true for entire countries in Europe that have not had fluoridated water or toothpaste. What has changed is that dental hygiene has improved, nutrition has improved, and access to dental care has improved. Studies do show a strong correlation between higher rates of tooth decay and lower economic status. Japan and all of continental Europe either rejected the fluoride concept from the beginning or have stopped the practice. Most of Great Britain has also discontinued the practice, and Australia and New Zealand are in the process of reversing the trend.
There is also evidence that communities with fluoridated water have a higher incidence of heart disease, and higher rates of bone cancer in young men. Some 30 percent of children in fluoridated communities have fluorosis, a malformation of tooth enamel that causes discoloration (usually chalky white patches) and brittleness. This is a permanent change in the teeth that has also been associated with abnormal bone structure. Advocates of putting fluoride in toothpaste and mouthwash argue that it is not swallowed, and therefore not ingested.
This substance has crept into every link in our food chain, and the evidence is that even without fluoridated water and toothpaste we're getting a higher dose than is safe or recommended in our daily diets. Avoiding Fluoride in Your Water You can be thankful if you live in an unfluoridated community because it's not easy to get rid of fluoride in your tap water. Distillation and reverse osmosis are the only two reliable methods for removing fluoride.

Some children drinking fluoridated water develop an unsightly staining of their teeth called dental fluorosis, which leads to psychological problems in some of these children. One of the unfortunate problems with fluoride is that it accumulates in the body, with the body having no good mechanism for removal. A population study in the U.S.A. compared the 10 largest cities fluoridating their water with the 10 largest cities that did not fluoridate their water.

Recent evidence suggests that even larger amounts of aluminum are released during cooking and stirring food in aluminum pots if fluoridated water is used. Some recent research into Alzheimer's disease, an increasing cause of dementia in the population, has shown that a significant number of patients with this disorder have high aluminum levels in brain tissue. Although it may not necessarily be true that aluminum cookware is directly causing Alzheimer's disease, the metal may somehow be participating in the expression of the disease process.

All this, when the largest study ever conducted in this country on the effects of fluoridation, which looked at 39,000 school children, saw no significant differences in incidence of tooth decay between cities that had fluoridated water and cities that did not. It was found in this study that Butler, Kansas, which had the lowest evidence of dental caries, did not use fluoridation in its water supply. It has no positive effects, but what about its down side? Fluoride is carcinogenic, and an immune suppressant that causes dental fluorosis (white or brown spots on the teeth).

Another example of the FDA's double standard is its attitude toward sodium fluoride, the substance that is added to the water supplies of over four thousand communities in the United States on the supposition that fluoridated water helps to reduce cavities. The original 1939 studies by Dr. H. Trendley Dean that led to this speculation, warned that those communities with low rates of tooth decay had in their natural drinking water, not only unusually high levels of fluoride, but also much more calcium. The report then stated that: "...

These fluoride levels are many times higher than the level of 1 part per million in fluoridated water. These preliminary results, released in 1989, reignited the fluoridation controversy. When the National Toxicology Program's Board of Scientific Counselors' Technical Reports Review Panel evaluated the results of the study in April 1990, they found the evidence "equivocal"—too weak to attribute the bone cancers to fluoride.

Likewise, in the Philadelphia Zoo there was a sharp increase in animal and bird deaths that coincided with the introduction of fluoridated water. Dr. Paul H. Phillips, a University of Chicago biochemist who spent twenty-nine years in research on fluoride toxicity, has pointed out that sodium fluoride, even when taken in extremely minute quantities, accumulates and builds up in the skeletal parts of the body Symptoms of chronic fluoride poisoning may not appear for many years, and when they do, they can be very hard to diagnose.
These concentrations are significant because many fluoridated water supplies are maintained at one ppm! One can only wonder how many cases of mild fluoride poisoning go unreported or are attributed to some other cause. "We're not exactly sure what the problem is," says the doctor, "but it's probably some kind of viral infection. Children in communities with fluoridated water have been shown to have between 25 and 65 percent less tooth decay than children in communities where the water supply is not fluoridated. Some groups, such as the National Health Federation and the Safe Water Foundation, have objected to fluoridation of public water supplies, contending that fluoride is a toxic and possibly carcinogenic chemical. Congress ordered the U.S. Public Health Service and National Toxicology Program to conduct an animal study investigating such concerns in 1977.

On the one hand, the almost complete elimination of rickets, goiter, and pellagra, invariably attributed to fortification of foods with vitamin D, iodine, and niacin, respectively, is considered one of the great public health achievements of the twentieth century, as is the 40%-6o% reduction in tooth decay that followed the introduction of fluoridated water.34 In some cases, however, factors other than fortification may have been equally or more important in eliminating nutrient deficiencies. The relationship of niacin fortification to pellagra best illustrates this point.

Cooking with fluoridated water in aluminum cookware increases the aluminum in the water and the food; still, the amounts we obtain in this manner are small in comparison with those from additives. Aluminum salts used in antiperspirants are not a major contaminant either, unless these products are overused. (Aerosol sprays, however, should be avoided for environmental toxicity reasons.) Antacids containing aluminum hydroxide can be a big source if they are taken regularly or abused, as antacids sometimes are. Some children's aspirins have been found to contain aluminum as well.
This 37 ppm is also a result of the use of fluoridated water, vitamins, and stannous fluoride toothpaste.) Though zinc is the twenty-fifth most abundant element in the earth's crust, measuring about 0.01 percent, it is water soluble both in the soil and in food. Rains can wash zinc (as well as iodine, sulfur, and selenium) from our farming soils, as can modern agricultural techniques. When we cook food, much of the zinc may go into the water, as do other minerals and vitamins, so the cooking liquids, especially from vegetables, should be consumed as well.

Many experts argue that it poses a serious health risk. Fluoride is a known poison and is classified as very toxic to extremely toxic in the National Library of Medicine's computerized data service on toxic substances. Numerous studies have demonstrated that fluorides are retained in the body and can build up to poisonous concentrations.23 "An enormous body of research documenting the toxic effects of acute and prolonged fluoride ingestion can readily be found in the medical library," says Thomas E. The suggested safe intake of fluoride (not necessarily the optimum, which we really do not know) is between 1.5 and 4.0 mg. per day.
