In 1950, the Public Health Service recommended using artificial fluoridation in the public water systems to fight tooth decay. Since the time fluoride entered the water system, there have been many health-related problems linked to its use but no statistically significant reduction in tooth decay. Dr. Dean himself has twice been forced to admit in court that his original statistics favoring fluoridation were invalid.26
Christa Danielson, M.D., found an increased risk of hip fracture in men and women over age 65 who had been exposed to fluoride in their drinking water for 20 years. |

At one point, it was thought by a few that fluoridation of the U.S. water supply was a plot by the Russians to take over the country. That speculation was, of course, utter nonsense. Later on, a couple of researchers claimed that fluoridation of water causes cancer. There is absolutely no evidence that this is true.
Fluorides not only significantly decrease the frequency of dental caries, they may also prevent and treat osteoporosis and protect against degenerative disease of the cardiovascular system. |

West Germany banned fluoridation on January 4, 1971. Sweden did so on November 18, 1971. And the highest court of the Netherlands declared fluoridation illegal on June 22, 1973. As the National Health Federation asked pointedly: "Do these countries know something we don't or refuse to accept?"3

| The resurgence of controversy surrounding fluoridation prompted the U.S. Public Health Service to conduct an in-depth study on the benefits versus risks of fluoride in water. Released in 1991, the report concluded that animal and epidemiologic studies fail to demonstrate a link between fluoridated water and cancer and advised that fluoridation continue because of its proven dental health benefits.

However, the fluoridation of our water supply and the liberal use of fluoride toothpaste introduce dangerously high concentrations of fluoride in a very active and toxic form. This contributes to a weakened metabolism in many people, and thus to the development of allergies, arthritis, cancer, and hypoglycemia. Excessive fluoride exposure has also been linked to hip fractures, hypothyroidism, Alzheimers disease, and reduced IQ. The bulk of scientific research shows that added fluoride does not protect the teeth of adults or children. |

The Delaney Congressional Investigation Committee, the government body charged with monitoring additives and other substances in the food supply, has stated, "fluoridation is mass medication without parallel in the history of medicine." Dr. Robert Carton, former scientist at the EPA, has said, "Fluoride is somewhat less toxic than arsenic and more toxic than lead, and you wouldn't want either of them in your mouth."
Chronic fluoride use has been linked to numerous health problems, including osteoporosis, arthritis, osteomalacia, and Alzheimer's disease. |

Is drugging an unstated motivation behind fluoridation? Fluorite, a naturally occurring compound of calcium and fluoride, is already used as a formidable tranquilizer in traditional Chinese medicine.4 Judging from the intensity of the battles that rage, and the tremendous pro-fluoride support coming from some factions in the government, there must be something behind fluoridation besides merely promoting healthy teeth. |

Does fluoridation Decrease Tooth Decay?
Surprisingly, the evidence for decreasing cavities after fluoridation is not strong.
Most of Europe does not fluoridate water. The number of decayed, missing or filled teeth (DMF) in U.S. children twelve years old declined by 25% between 1974 and 1988. In the Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland, nations not using fluoride, the decline in DMF for the same years in twelve year olds was 36%, 40%, and 47% respectively.

Another environmental cancer-triggering substance most people rarely think about is asbestos. We have heard bad things about it and have also heard that it has been largely banned and regulated. However, what we don't know is that a great deal of asbestos is still in our environment. Countless buildings all over the United States still contain asbestos insulation that releases microscopic fibers into the air the people in those buildings breathe. |

In countries where water fluoridation is common, we can suspect that all commercial liquids with added water contain fluorides. Commonly, these include all soft drinks, soy milk, and even 100 percent fruit juice, which is usually reconstituted by adding water to concentrates. However, municipal tap water also contains other added chemicals and a good water filter is recommended.

Water Fluoridation: Equally shortsighted is the official campaign to fluoridate our water supply. Modern dentistry tries to retard the growth of plaque bacteria that causes cavities by mechanical means and by poisoning the bacteria with fluoride. Fluoride is a strong enzyme poison. When present in sufficient concentration during development of the teeth, it is incorporated mainly as insoluble calcium fluoride. |

Public Health study on fluoridation was supposed to compare hundreds of communities, but the final study only included a few dozen, presumably those that fit the desired pro-fluoridation profile. And even those were flawed. For example, two towns in Michigan were compared for dental cavities, but those children studied in the fluoridated community had higher incomes, received regular dental checkups, and agreed to brush their teeth twice a day. It wouldn't seem strange that they would have a lower rate of cavities, with or without fluoride! |

Wheatgrass efficiently neutralizes the toxicity of sodium fluoride, which is used in the fluoridation of tap water (and as a rat poison). It may be taken internally, used as a wash for throat and eyes, or as a topical application (scalp tonic, cleanser). Chlorophyll makes up nearly 70 percent of the plant's solid content and is its most important nutrient; nearly identical to human blood, chlorophyll differs only in that it uses magnesium as a bond instead of iron. Wheatgrass contains virtually a full selection of minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and protein. |

But in 1977, one top fluoride researcher told a congressional committee that unless something were done to stop the fluoridation of water in the United States, more than 500,000 people alive at the time of his speech could be expected to die from fluorida-tion-linked cancer!
It is also suspected by many researchers that fluoride may even be a contributing factor to the development Alzheimer's disease. This is because aluminum in the brain has been suspected to be a factor in this debilitating disease. The connection here is that elemental aluminum cannot pass the blood-brain barrier by itself. |

All this, when the largest study ever conducted in this country on the effects of fluoridation, which looked at 39,000 school children, saw no significant differences in incidence of tooth decay between cities that had fluoridated water and cities that did not. It was found in this study that Butler, Kansas, which had the lowest evidence of dental caries, did not use fluoridation in its water supply.
It has no positive effects, but what about its down side? Fluoride is carcinogenic, and an immune suppressant that causes dental fluorosis (white or brown spots on the teeth). |

Until recently, the birth defect that causes Down syndrome was thought to be untreatable. A search of the scientific literature, however, indicates that high-potency vitamin supplements, 5-hydroxytryptophan, the European dmg piracetam, and other supplements can be effective in treating children with Down syndrome. |

| These preliminary results, released in 1989, reignited the fluoridation controversy. When the National Toxicology Program's Board of Scientific Counselors' Technical Reports Review Panel evaluated the results of the study in April 1990, they found the evidence "equivocal"too weak to attribute the bone cancers to fluoride. Pointing out that no cancers occurred in mice or in female rats receiving the same dose of fluoride and that only a few of the male rats were affected, the panel decided the cancers in the male rats could have occurred by chance rather than because of the fluoride. |

Judging from the intensity of the battles that rage, and the tremendous pro-fluoride support coming from some factions in the government, there must be something behind fluoridation besides merely promoting healthy teeth. Otherwise local and federal governments could easily advocate free fluoride pills for children whose parents consented (it is presumed that the teeth of children benefit most from fluoride). This would cost less than city-wide water-treatment installations. |

John Yiamouyiannis, one of the world's foremost authorities on the effects of fluoridation, states that fluoride, in the amount added to drinking water, "inhibits over 100 different enzymes in the cells of people living in fluoridated areas." His research (with the chief chemist at the National Cancer Institute) estimated that fluoride added to the nations' water supply was responsible for 10,000 additional deaths from cancer per year.6 A recent study in the journal Brain Research showed that low doses of fluoride caused neurologic damage in rats. |

Germany and Belgium have discontinued their fluoride experiments on the human population, and France and Norway have never found sufficient evidence to warrant water fluoridation. In truth, most tests are difficult to interpret since the mineral content of the water itself is one of the deciding factors. If there is adequate calcium in water, fluoride will form calcium fluoride, which may be of some benefit. Nevertheless, studies indicate that fluoride per se is one of nature's principal aging factors. |

| Some groups, such as the National Health Federation and the Safe Water Foundation, have objected to fluoridation of public water supplies, contending that fluoride is a toxic and possibly carcinogenic chemical. Congress ordered the U.S. Public Health Service and National Toxicology Program to conduct an animal study investigating such concerns in 1977.
For two years, groups of male and female mice and rats were given water containing either no fluoride or varying amounts of it. While none of the mice or female rats developed cancer, some of the male rats did. |

In an effort to down play the importance of this, supporters of fluoridation have claimed that soft tissue levels of fluoride (for example, the amount of fluoride in kidney, thyroid, spleen, etc.), even in people drinking fluoridated water, would never reach 1 part per million. Therefore, they maintained, the levels of fluoride necessary to inhibit these important enzymes would never be found in these tissues. This claim is incorrect as can be seen in the table below. |

The problem with these as well as other studies showing an increase in cancer death rates is that many of them used a population too small to make any reliable conclusion as to whether fluoridation does or does not show an increase in cancer death rate in general. Other studies, such as the Erickson study, cannot be relied upon since they gave an estimate of the cancer death rates of fluoridated and nonfluoridated cities for only one year and thus did not allow for a time-trend analysis.

Proponents say that fluoride occurs naturally and helps develop and maintain strong bones and teeth. Opponents have vastly differing views. Research reported in the Journal of Dental Research concluded that tooth decay rates in Western Europe, which is 98 percent unfluoridated, have declined as much as they have in the United States in recent decades. Indeed, it is only in the United States that the government champions fluoride. |
