| Consequently the greatest positive effects of fluoridation are seen in children. (However there are indications that the elderly may be helped as well I— though by having stronger bones rather than less cavities in their teeth; this can bej important as this age group starts having problems with osteoporosis.)
In addition to seeing benefits from ingesting fluoride, it is also possible to achieve good results by applying fluoride directly to the surface of teeth (which is the thinking of adding fluoride to toothpaste). |

Tooth decay has decreased 50 to 60 percent over the last thirty years, and this improvement has largely been attributed to fluoridation of public water supplies. However, serious challenges to this assumption have shown comparable reduction of tooth decay in fluoridated and nonfluoridated areas alike.48 It is well accepted in the scientific community that excessive fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, a condition that has symptoms ranging from mild discoloration or mottling to darkened, pitted, brittle teeth that are very sensitive to fracture. |

Presently, both these sources are becoming more and more polluted as toxic chemicals, acid rain, raw sewage, agricultural herbicides, pesticide runoff, chlorination, fluoridation, sewage landfills, and radioactive wastes are either dumped into or seep into these two types of water sources. One of the best-known examples of toxic water pollution to date is the infamous Love Canal, where according to The New York Times in 1984, thousands of tons of toxic chemicals were dumped, including 60 pounds of the deadly poison dioxin.

Although some possible toxic effects from fluoridation have not been well proven, they have certainly not been disproven, and there is adequate reason to question its safety. It is clear that many individuals are allergic or hypersensitive to fluoride. And yet, whether or not to fluoridate has become more a political question than a medical one. I generally recommend avoiding water and vitamins that have been fluoridated. |

Vance detested tap water, declaring that the chlorination and fluoridation poisoned rather than helped animals in the recovery stages. I was to use only well or distilled water. Freshly made tomato juice was his favorite base to work from. We had an old Osterizer in the kitchen, which I used for this purpose. I usually started with a couple of medium-sized and ripe tomatoes, adding a tiny bit of water to thin things down if the mixture became too thick. Then I would add a little parsley or spinach leaves or turnip leaves or Romaine lettuce. |

John Yiamouyiannis, one of the world's foremost authorities on the effects of fluoridation, states that fluoride, in the amount added to drinking water, "inhibits over 100 different enzymes in the cells of people living in fluoridated areas." His research (with the chief chemist at the National Cancer Institute) estimated that the fluoride added to the nation's water supply was responsible for 10,000 additional deaths from cancer per year.4 A recent study in the journal Brain Research showed that low doses of fluoride caused neurological damage in rats. |

More shockingly, we will find that many say the fluoridation of water, a public health practice established in most major cities, is not only dangerous to our bodies but has no positive benefits for teeth at all.
Healthy Diet. Healthy Teeth_
The first thing to think about when it comes to healthy teeth is whether we are following an appropriate diet, which will be reflected in the condition of the gums and teeth.

There is some controversy as to whether fluoridation has some subtle poisoning effect or whether it is nontoxic and beneficial. In my opinion, fluoridated water is another example of technology's treating the effect instead of correcting the cause, which is primarily poor diet.
Fluoride is probably not essential to humans, though it is helpful in strengthening the bones and teeth. It is found only in trace amounts, about 2-3 grams, in the body, and most of that is in bones and teeth. The blood level of fluoride is about 0.3 mg. per 100 ml. |
| Copper pipes may add excess copper to our bodies, and often have lead solder lines, which adds to lead contamination. fluoridation of water is also of concern to many people. Although no definite short-term dangers have been found to be associated with it, other than toxicity from excessive intake levels, the long-range effects of drinking fluoridated water are not yet known.
Most inorganic pollutants are safe at low concentrations, although lead and mercury can be neurotoxic, and nitrosamines are carcinogenic. |

It also stated that "scientists within and outside the National Cancer Program have found again that fluoridation of drinking water does not contribute to a cancer burden for people''—a claim sharply contested by unorthodox scientists such as Dean Burk, Ph.D., and John Yiamouyiannis, Ph.D. (Congressional Record, December 16, 1975).
What the report didn't say was what millions of people had been led to expect: that the National Cancer Program had found a cure for even one major type of human cancer.

Tooth decay was an even bigger problem before the fluoridation of water in this century. From ancient times until the nineteenth century, herbalists put a great deal of effort into studying plants that helped preserve teeth. They discovered quite a few that were very effective.

ADVERSE REACTIONS
At the amounts recommended for fluoridation of drinking water and at the recommended doses used for caries prophylaxis, fluoride (sodium fluoride) is generally well tolerated and has not been found to have significant adverse reactions.
Recommended adequate intake for adult males is 4 milligrams daily and for adult females, 3 milligrams daily.
Adverse reactions are occasionally reported at doses of 5 to 10 milligrams daily and are more frequently reported at doses of 10 to 20 milligrams daily and higher. |

He cited fluoride as the cause of the staining, but also credited fluoride as the reason these same people had fewer cavities.25 In 1950, the Public Health Service recommended using artificial fluoridation in the public water systems to fight tooth decay. Sir Richard Doll's role in the debate on the fluoridation of water supplies was equally predictable. It has been known for a long time that fluoride is a poison. In October 1944 the Journal of the American Medical Association published an editorial stating "that the use of drinking water containing as little as 1.2 to 3 parts per million of fluoride will cause such developmental disturbances in bones as osteosclerosis, spondylosis, and osteopetrosis, as well as goitre. |

Fluorides not only significantly decrease the frequency of dental caries, they may also prevent and treat osteoporosis and protect against degenerative disease of the cardiovascular system. Other health benefits for fluoride are expected to be discovered as we move away from thinking about the element as foe and toward embracing it more as friend. |
