Jumping the Gun: The Beginning of a Cruel Hoax
"Perhaps the greatest deterrent to meaningful political engagement of dentists in the promotion of water fluoridation is the mistaken hut widespread assumption that to do so they must have full and complete knowledge of the detailed and voluminous scientific literature on the relationship of water fluoridation to dental and general health. They do not. ...as soon as dentists recognise their responsibility in the politics of fluoridation, their performance will be outstanding. In politics, the emphasis is on propagandising rather than on education. |

| The practice of water fluoridation was further justified by more glowing studies claiming to show that communities using fluoridated drinking water had a much lower rate of tooth decay than those using unfluoridated water. The fluoride and cavity myth has been perpetuated by the fact that the rate of dental cavities has dropped steadily in the past 30 years, approximately the amount of time that our water has been fluoridated. So it must be good for us, right? Wrong.

In countries where water fluoridation is common, we can suspect that all commercial liquids with added water contain fluorides. Commonly, these include all soft drinks, soy milk, and even 100 percent fruit juice, which is usually reconstituted by adding water to concentrates. However, municipal tap water also contains other added chemicals and a good water filter is recommended.

Fluoride
Some evidence suggests that water fluoridation may be linked to some types of cancer, although this is controversial. A study published in 1996 reported on the relationship between fluoride concentration in drinking water and deaths from uterine cancer in Okinawa, Japan. Fluoride was added to the water supplies in the region in the period from 1945 to 1972. The results showed significant links between the time of water fluoridation and deaths from uterine cancer.74

The United States is one of a very few countries that still promote water fluoridation. Most of Western Europe has outlawed it; even most of U.S. communities, when allowed to vote, have rejected fluoridation; this has happened in more than 50 communities since 1999. (For further information on the health dangers of fluoride and a good bibliography of the scientific literature on fluoride, see: www.fluoridealert.org.)

Fluoride used in water fluoridation was initially associated with the fluorides used to kill insects, mice and rats. These insecticides and rodenticides, however, used poisonous organic fluorides, not inorganic fluorides, which are significantly less toxic, and which are the forms used for water fluoridation. At one point, it was thought by a few that fluoridation of the U.S. water supply was a plot by the Russians to take over the country. That speculation was, of course, utter nonsense. Later on, a couple of researchers claimed that fluoridation of water causes cancer. |

If this sounds familiar, it is probably because the words are merely parroting Dr. Barrett's "Newspeak" (see page 145).
This gives some idea of how the distortions and defamations of Dr. Barrett are used in an attempt to prevent discussion of the hazards of fluoridation from coming before the public.

John Colquhoun, former Chief Dental Officer of the Department of Health, in Auckland, New Zealand pointed out that dental "treatment levels have continued to decline in both fluoridated and unfluoridated areas, and are related to social class factors rather than to the presence or absence of water fluoridation. In the unfluoridated areas all the children, and in the fluoridated areas only selected children, had received regular topical fluoride treatments. In both areas the use of fluoride toothpastes and oral hygiene had been encouraged. |

According to the most recent report available at this time, most of the advanced Western European countries have banned fluoridation or given it up. Belgium, West Germany, and Sweden have abandoned their pilot fluoridation experiments on human populations and are not fluoridating any public water supplies. Sweden, Denmark, and Holland have banned it completely. Many other countries, such as France, Italy, and Norway have never fluoridated their drinking water. |

Hypothyroidism may be caused by poor general nutrition, especially too little high-quality protein. water fluoridation is also thought to be a potential thyroid suppressant. Huge quantities of foods in the cabbage family can suppress thyroid function as well, but this is extremely rare.
Standard treatment for hypothyroidism consists of prescription synthetic thyroid hormone. Natural thyroid hormone is much more efficacious, but this has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Patients may be started on the lowest possible dosage of thyroid hormone and gradually built up. |

| Several studies have found no association between water fluoridation and cancer in humans, which is comforting. However, those studies could only have detected major increases in cancer, not modest ones.
If fluoride is a carcinogen at all, it is a very weak one. But even weak carcinogens shouldn't be added to the food or water supply. If fluoride is confirmed to promote cancer, safer methods—such as the use of dentifrices—must be adopted to protect growing teeth.
Cancer aside, if children get too much fluoride, they can get dental fluorosis, or mottled and discolored teeth. |

Fluoride supplements may be useful in areas where the water is not fluoridated but, as with water fluoridation, their use is controversial. Sodium fluoride is the least toxic form of fluoride supplement.
Fluoride is not classed as an essential nutrient but because of its strengthening effect on bones and teeth it is officially considered to be a beneficial element in humans. Fluoride is found in the teeth, bones, thyroid gland and skin. The average body contains about 2.6 g of fluoride.

A study published in 1997 in the Journal of the American Dental Association suggest that some commercially available infant foods contain high levels of fluoride which may put babies at risk of fluorosis. Some foods, particularly those containing chicken, are processed in ways which lead to high fluoride concentrations. Adding water to dry baby food also increases fluoride content. |

Germany and Belgium have discontinued their fluoride experiments on the human population, and France and Norway have never found sufficient evidence to warrant water fluoridation. In truth, most tests are difficult to interpret since the mineral content of the water itself is one of the deciding factors. If there is adequate calcium in water, fluoride will form calcium fluoride, which may be of some benefit. Nevertheless, studies indicate that fluoride per se is one of nature's principal aging factors. |

In 1945, water fluoridation began in Grand Rapids, Michigan as a public health measure to reduce the incidence of caries. Presently, approximately 60% of community water supplies in the United States contain fluoride from 0.7 to 1.2 parts per million or 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter.
Fluoride is the anionic form of fluorine. Fluorine is a halogen gas with atomic number 9 and an atomic weight of 19 daltons. Its symbol is F. Fluorine is the most electronegative element in the periodic table and, in size, it is very similar to the first element, hydrogen. |

However, water fluoridation is a controversial issue and many experts feel that the practice should be discontinued.
Children living in areas were the water is fluoridated are at increased risk of dental fluorosis, in which teeth become mottled with yellow or brown spots. Bottle fed babies are at particular risk if formula is made with fluoridated tap water. Breast milk and ready-to-feed formula contain safe fluoride levels and experts recommend using low fluoride filtered or distilled water with formula. Fluoridation may also increase the risk of dermatitis in sensitive people. |
